A Walk In the Várzea

“For we must acknowledge that the most productive seats of animal life, where all the bizarre and extraordinary forms that the Naturalist best loves are met with, lie under the suns of the tropics, and far removed from temperate latitudes.” Philip Lutley Sclater (1858)

Welcome to a Window into my Research

This blog documents my fieldwork and PhD research in Brazil. I'm working in the Amazonian floodplain (or várzea) near the city of Santarem in the Lower Amazon studying the giant fish arapaima. The floodplains where arapaima live are unique ecosystems with high and low water seasons; its not just “terrestrial” or “aquatic”, but both and somewhere in between.

This research is part of a larger effort to conserve and protect the animals that live in the várzea (like the arapiama) and the habitat that these animals depend on. This work has received funding from various sources and involves partners in the US and Brazil. The purpose of this blog is to share my personal experiences and opinions, which are mine and mine alone.

I hope you enjoy!
